Where Did Lana Del Rey Come From?
by Sarah Davis
A few weeks ago, I had never heard of Lana Del Rey. After a controversial performance on Saturday Night Live that received more press than any recent world event, she has just released her first album, "Born To Die" this past week. First off, she was the first musical guest on SNL to ever perform before releasing a full album. Second, I have always thought that every musician on SNL sounds terrible.
While her title track, "Born To Die" is actually pretty good, I'm just wondering what all of the hype was really about? I mean, every celebrity on Twitter (I don't know who sent them all the memo) was backing this girl up, defending her honor when her Saturday Night Live performance was attacked, and hyping her album release. The odd part about it is that just last year, she was a Youtube artist named Lizzy Grant. After making only a few videos, she was signed by a record label. Remember how Taylor Swift really had to work her Myspace account to get noticed? All that the SNL publicity did was give her album sales a boost.
On a personal note, I love her music. It sounds beyond her years, but very creepy and chilling at the same time. It's definitely not "feel good" music. I stayed up last night until 4am working on various things for my book, and I listened to her music all night.
