Angelina Jolie revealed in the New York Times yesterday that she has recently undergone a preventative double mastectomy, in a self-written piece titled, “My Medical Choice.” She explains her decision as a way to reduce her risk for breast cancer, which was determined to be 87%, down to under 5%. The actress shares that she had an inherited gene mutation, known as BRAC1, which gives a 65% risk of breast cancer to those who carry it.
It was a shocking and unexpected piece to read, but much praise is being given to Angelina for sharing this personal story and opening a discussion in households across the world about not only preventative double mastectomies, but the gene mutation, BRAC1.
